A kettlebell is a traditional Russian training tool that has been used since the turn of the century to develop full body conditioning and fitness.
A kettlebell looks like a cannon ball with a handle. The shape of the kettlebell allows for unique positioning of the weight directly above your center of mass (unlike a dumbbell or barbell which must be held in front of the body) and allows you to keep your hand and wrists in neutral alignment, which enable for greater endurance and longevity in the core lifts so that you can produce a much higher volume of exercise and thus greater conditioning and fitness.
There will be two kettlebell competitions in February; one in the Bay Area, and one in the East Coast. On Feb. 9th, World Kettlebell Club (WKC) and Ice Chamber will be hosting the 2013 West Coast Kettlebell Sport Classic in Richmond, CA. On Feb. 15th-16th, the International Kettlebell and Fitness Federation (IKFF) and Seacoast Kettlebell will be hosting the 2013 IKFF Northeast Regional Championship in Dover, NH.
The very first kettlebell club in Benicia, CA. started on Jan. 3rd, 2013 at Griffin Fitness. Classes will be ongoing at this location every Tuesday and Thursday night at 6:30pm.
"Kettlebells can provide one heck of a workout. Based on comparisons with data from previous research on standard weight training, the HR and VO2 responses during the kettlebell snatch routine suggest it provides a much higher-intensity workout than standard weight-training routines." -from the American Council on Exercise
Whether you want to train for explosive power, strength, endurance, or cardio, the kettlebell can help you reach your goals. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) has recently even named the kettlebell snatch one of the best exercises for fat loss. - from Steve and Jeff Burmann
